The Princess of Wales's Annual Yuletide Service of Carols Honours Unsung Heroes
The Princess of Wales is hosting her annual Yuletide celebration at the iconic London venue, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.
The sizable congregation will listen to a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from stars like award-winning actors.
Focusing on Compassion and Love
The theme of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.
Attending the event are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the festive gathering.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The royal has been undertaking her own measured re-emergence to public life following her health challenges and treatment, recently giving her initial major address in two years, in which she discussed recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Music and Opportunity
Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to budding artists supported by the Future Talent organisation, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for music lessons.
Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been assisted by the charity, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be playing at the evening's event.
"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now a student at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.
A Sisterly Duo
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Attending the service will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will include nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a youth community award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to raise money for local food charities.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.
The musical lineup includes recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the perfect culmination."
This annual carol service will be broadcast on a major network on Christmas Eve.
