Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs must be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
